As some of you already know I really enjoyed playing Fallout 3 and the expansion packs to that game, so you can understand I was quite pleased to see that a new installment in the series is in the making and is set to be released in the fall of 2010.
Tech details
When I first heard that this game was coming, it wasn't clear to me whether this would be another expansion pack to Fallout 3, or a separate stand alone game. After some research I've found that it will indeed be a fully new game, albeit running on the same game engine as Fallout 3. [1] So a new storyline, but using the same technology. The game will also be in a retro-futuristic style, like the previous installment.
The gameplay will be pretty much the same as in Fallout 3, with some minor changes and some new features. It will be single player only (unfortunately.)
In Fallout New Vegas, the year is 2280, which is 3 years after the storyline of Fallout 3. New Vegas has not been hit by an atom bomb like many of the other cities in the Fallout series, so it is relatively undamaged. From what I read, it seems there will be a war going on between the NCR, the Caesar's Legion slavers, and the local New Vegas populace.
The main character will be "a courier, who was left to die in a shallow grave, rescued by a TV Robot named Victor, and patched up by a Doctor Mitchell." [1] If you look at the trailer video in this article, you can see the robot and I assume the hand sticking out of the ground is that of the main character.
None of the characters from Fallout 3 will return in this new game, which makes sense, as Vegas is a long way from the places that Fallout 3 took place in. In a wasteland world, it would be pretty unlikely that people travel that far. Apparently there will be some references to the events from Fallout 2 though, but I've never played that myself, so I can't really comment on it. Am actually considering picking up a copy of the first two installments as well, to get a better look at where the series came from.

Personally I'm really looking forward to this game. Although I'm not really one for RPG games, I thought Fallout 3 was great. The atmosphere really makes the game. If you've not played it yet I suggest you get yourself a copy and try it out. Amongst others, it's available through steam as a "game of the year edition" which includes the game itself and all five expansion packs for 50 EUR. Still pretty steep, but well worth it in my opinion.
Anyway, let's hope this one will be just as good..

Yea you should! You haven't played the expansions yet have you? They're also quite good, apart from the spaceship one.. Didn't really like that one.
Like I said in the article; the game of the year thing with all the packs is "only" 50 EUR now.

No i havent played the expansions yet, think i will pop into town tomorrow morning and buy it, SUCH a good game.
